Covered Markets

La halle de Grenade (XIV°)

The covered market of Grenade is a listed monument. It has been used for centuries, each week for the market and all year long for fairs, shows and festivals.

It is located in the heart of the city and its size is remarkable: 1800 m2. It is the oldest covered market of France. The wood used for this building comes from the Pyrenees and was cut at the end of the XIIIth century.

The framework is monumental and it contains two storeys with rooms that used to be the town hall up to the Revolution. Dry measures used for selling cereals were also stored in these rooms. The belfry was added on the top of the roof in the XVIIth century.

The covered market was built by the founders of Grenade: the Cistercian abbey of Grandselve and Eustache de Beaumarchais who represented the King of France. Their purpose was to develop commerce and to levy taxes on all exchanges.

The traditional market takes place on Saturday morning.

La halle de Thil

The small covered market of Thil is made of brick. It gives access to the town hall that was built in 1840 on the spot of a Celtic tumulus.

La halle de Launac

The activities of Launac have always been linked with agriculture and the covered market reminds us of the numerous markets and fairs that used to take place here in the past.

This building was built in 1850 by a famous architect called Jacques-Jean Esquié. At the same time he also designed the bell tower in Galembrun (also in Launac).

This covered market was ended in 2009 and we now can admire this magnificent building made of brick.

The traditional market takes place on Sunday morning.

The covered market has a large framework that contains rooms that used to be the town hall of the village. On one of the pillars the traces of the former staircase can still be seen.
